The "Marshall" starter cartridge (early type)
The "Marshall" starter cartridge
(Early type)
Made by Eley-Kynoch for the Field-Marshall tractor, this unusual 12-gauge blank cartridge formed part of the tractor’s cartridge-starting system.
Rather than firing shot, the cartridge produced the force needed to drive the tractor’s large single-cylinder diesel engine through its starting stroke. Fired from a special breech in the engine, it provided the initial “kick” that brought the Field-Marshall to life.
A fascinating piece of British agricultural and cartridge history.
