Crockart-Perth "J C & S" 12 Gauge Cartridge
A nice, James Crockart & Son “J C & S” 12-bore sporting cartridge, associated with the historic Scottish gunmaking firm of Blairgowrie, Perthshire.
James Crockart established his gunmaking business in Blairgowrie in 1852, initially opening a shop in Leslie Street before expanding to premises in Allan Street. In addition to manufacturing sporting and target guns and supplying fishing tackle, Crockart was also involved in the loading of sporting cartridges.
The distinctive “J C & S” marking is associated with James Crockart & Son and provides an attractive connection with Scotland's traditional provincial gunmaking and cartridge-loading trade.
Cartridges carrying the names or initials of smaller Scottish gunmakers are particularly interesting survivors, reflecting a period when local gunmakers supplied their sporting customers with cartridges carrying their own house markings.
