Eley 8 Gauge Gastight Crockart-Perth

The "ELEY 8 BORE GASTIHT PAPER CARTRIDGE"

A fine example of a large-bore Eley paper-cased cartridge, this particular example was supplied by Crockart of Perth, the renowned Scottish gunmaker and sporting outfitter.

The 8 bore belongs to an era when substantial sporting guns were used for wildfowling and other specialist purposes.

Far larger than the familiar 12 bore, the 8 bore could carry a considerably heavier charge of shot and was particularly associated with wildfowling, where its greater payload was suited to shooting geese and other waterfowl at longer ranges.

Eley was one of Britain’s most important ammunition manufacturers, and surviving paper-cased 8-bore cartridges provide a fascinating reminder of the large-bore sporting guns of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

An impressive and increasingly collectable piece of British shooting and wildfowling history.
