Eley 'Spherical Ball' - Single Projectile
Eley 'Spherical Ball' - Single Projectile
An interesting example from the history of British sporting ammunition, the Eley “Spherical Ball” cartridge was designed to fire a single round projectile rather than the multiple pellets normally associated with a shotgun cartridge.
Eley was one of Britain’s best-known ammunition manufacturers, with a history stretching back to the early 19th century. Alongside its conventional sporting and game cartridges, the company produced a wide variety of specialised loads to meet the changing requirements of shooters at home and overseas.
The “Spherical Ball” loading represents an earlier approach to the single-projectile shotgun cartridge. As its name suggests, the projectile was a spherical lead ball, distinguishing it from later elongated slug designs. Cartridges of this type form an interesting link between traditional round-ball ammunition and the more specialised shotgun slug cartridges that subsequently became available.
