Pneumatic Cartridge Co - 12G Cartridge
Pneumatic Cartridge Co. – 12G Vintage Cartridge
An interesting survivor from British cartridge-making history, the Pneumatic Cartridge Co. became known for its distinctive approach to shotgun cartridge design.
Rather than relying solely on the conventional felt wadding of the period, the company promoted a patented “pneumatic” system incorporating an air chamber. Contemporary advertising described this air chamber as acting as a cushion, with the intention of reducing recoil and the fatigue associated with repeated shooting.
The company was associated for many years with Edinburgh, including premises at 96–98 Holyrood Road, and later operated from Cheese Lane in Bristol. Period advertisements from the 1950s continued to promote Pneumatic cartridges to the sporting shooter, emphasising their combination of performance and reduced recoil.
Today, surviving 12-bore Pneumatic cartridges are fascinating pieces of British shooting heritage. Their unusual construction, distinctive branding and connection with an inventive period in sporting ammunition manufacture make them particularly interesting to cartridge collectors and enthusiasts of vintage shooting memorabilia.
