Purdey "Special" 12G cartridge
A good example of a James Purdey & Sons 12-bore sporting cartridge, bearing the name of one of London's most celebrated gunmaking houses.
Founded in London in 1814, James Purdey & Sons became internationally renowned for the quality of its sporting guns and rifles. The firm was closely involved with the development of the breech-loading sporting gun during the Victorian period and subsequently supplied cartridges carrying the prestigious Purdey name for use by its clientele.
Purdey-branded cartridges form an interesting specialist area of British cartridge collecting. Surviving examples reflect the changing styles of cartridge manufacture, loading and presentation across the late Victorian and 20th-century sporting eras.
With its association with the famous London gunmaker, this 12-bore example is an attractive piece of British sporting and gunmaking history.
